Steve graduated from high school at sixteen and went straight to college. He went straight through from undergrad to grad until he finished at twenty five with a PhD. After repeated failed attempts to get on at NASA, Steve started teaching college. He's always a popular teacher, engaging and personable if slightly off in some ways. As the first episode opens he is setting out on the space shuttle to test a theory he and his childhood friend, DK, have proposed, while his proud father (Jack Crichton), who was also an astronaut in his younger days, watches. However, due to a scientific phenomenon he had not anticipated, the experiment results in Crichton traveling through a wormhole to a distant part of the universe, and by the end of the first episode he finds himself on the run aboard Moya with a collection of aliens who eventually become his allies and friends.
